The Team
Morningstar’s Global Tax team is part of the broader Finance organization and is
responsible for worldwide tax accounting, compliance and reporting, planning ,
and tax processes. Morningstar is establishing a Tax Centre of Excellence (“Tax
CoE”) to support the global tax operation by driving consistency, quality,
automation, and strong governance across jurisdictions, while partnering closely
with regional finance teams, external advisors, and auditors.
The Role
- The Senior Manager – Global Tax will be a key member of the Tax CoE, supporting
- global tax accounting, compliance and reporting, planning and process excellence
- initiatives. This role will play a critical part in the timely filing and review
- of income tax returns, preparing of supporting calculations for quarterly and
- annual global income tax provision under US GAAP (ASC 740), and transformation
- of tax processes through standardization and automation.
- The role will work closely with the Global Tax leadership, regional accounting,
- finance and tax teams, as well as external advisors to ensure accurate, timely,
- and efficient planning and compliance for a US-based multinational, publicly
- listed organization.
- This role will report directly to the Global Head of Tax based in Chicago and
- will require overlap with Europe and US Timezones.
Key Responsibilities
- Global Tax Accounting & Reporting
- Support the preparation of the quarterly and annual global income tax
provisions under US GAAP (ASC 740), including coordination with regional
finance and tax teams.
- Review income tax general ledger rollforwards for accuracy.
- Review current and deferred tax calculations for non‑US entities, including
permanent and temporary differences, valuation allowances, uncertain tax
positions, and effective tax rate analysis.
- Assist with certain US-specific international tax calculations (e.g., GILTI,
FDII, BEAT, FTC, Subpart F, APB 23, foreign currency translation impacts,
etc.) in coordination with subject matter experts.
- Review tax disclosures for non-US statutory filings and internal management
reporting.
- Support tax accounting aspects of business combinations, reorganizations, and
other significant transactions.
- Participate in maintenance of transfer pricing program across our
international operations.
Controls, Governance & Audit Support
- Build and maintain robust audit files and technical documentation to support
tax positions, estimates, and judgments.
- Partner with external auditors to ensure timely and smooth audit closure of
tax accounting matters.
- Assist in identifying, documenting, and evaluating uncertain tax positions in
accordance with US GAAP (ASC 740) or local requirements.
Tax Technology, Automation & Process Excellence
- Act as a key contributor to tax process standardization and automation
initiatives within the Tax CoE.
- Manage and optimize tax provision systems and technology tools (e.g.,
ONESOURCE or similar), including data integrity, templates, and reporting
outputs.
- Identify opportunities to improve data flow, controls, and efficiency between
Finance, Accounting, and Tax systems in coordination with Information
Technology
- Continuously assess emerging tax technology and best practices to enhance
scalability and control.
Business Partnering & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as a global tax partner to regional finance teams, providing guidance
on tax accounting, reporting requirements, and year‑end close matters.
- Collaborate with external advisors on tax accounting, compliance support, and
technical matters.
- Contribute to tax planning initiatives and special projects, including
modeling and impact analyses.
Leadership & Team Development
- Act as a senior individual contributor and mentor within the Tax CoE,
providing technical guidance and reviewing work prepared by junior team
members.
- Support the development of tax knowledge and documentation to enable
consistent global execution.
- Drive a culture of quality, ownership, and continuous improvement within
global tax operations.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Chartered Accountant (CA) with 8–12 years of progressive tax experience,
including public accounting (Big 4 preferred) and/or corporate tax in a
US-based multinational, publicly traded environment.
- Strong hands‑on experience with US GAAP (ASC 740) income tax accounting and
global tax provision processes.
- Understanding of US and international tax concepts and global tax reporting
considerations.
- Strong Excel skills and experience working with large data sets across
multiple entities.
- Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines in a complex, global environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain
complex tax topics to non‑tax stakeholders.
Preferred
- Experience supporting US multinationals (specifically with respect to income
tax reporting under US GAAP) and statutory audits for non-US companies.
- Exposure to tax technology and provision software, automation tools, or
finance transformation initiatives. Experience with AI and other tools (e.g.
Alteryx, etc.) is a plus.
- Prior experience working in a shared services or centre of excellence model.
- Experience partnering across regions, time zones, and cultures.
