What You’ll Do: Prepare and file monthly commodity tax returns across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with legislation. Prepare and record monthly journal entries, performs general ledger reconciliations related to Canadian indirect taxes, investigate and resolve variances.
Support annual planning activities (budget preparation and forecasting for tax accounts). Monitor and enhance processes to ensure commodity taxes are correctly applied within POS systems; identify and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner. Support tax audits by analyzing and compiling required documentation; contribute to post-audit assessments and remediation actions.
Review and maintain processes to ensure accurate assessment of commodity taxes on purchases and expenses; identify gaps and recommend improvements. Monitor changes in federal and provincial tax legislation and business processes; assess impacts and support timely process updates.
experience
in Canadian taxation, with a focus on indirect taxes; solid understanding of Canadian tax law. Post-secondary education in related field (e.g. Accounting/Finance/Economics); working towards the CPA designation is considered an asset. Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills; ability to leverage prior
experience
and adapt quickly to changing work environments. Strong time management
skills
including the ability to prioritize, meet tight deadlines, escalating certain issues as necessary. Strong problem-solving and research
skills
(identifying and correcting errors as they occur, paying attention to detail). A passion for continuous learning and curiosity to explore what’s possible. Excellent spreadsheet management
skills
(Microsoft Excel). Able to create intermediate to complex spreadsheets, conduct financial modeling, manipulate large sets of data (advanced formulas, pivot tables, graphs, lookups). Strong verbal and written communication
skills
