JOB SUMMARY

OIL AND GAS INDIRECT TAX COMPLIANCE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSEEING AND ADMINISTRATION OF INDIRECT TAX COMPLIANCE WITHIN MEWBOURNE OIL COMPANY. THIS POSITION REQUIRES A STRONG UNDERSTANDING OF TAX REGULATIONS AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY AND AS PART OF A TEAM. IT IS A CRITICAL ROLE IN ENSURING THE COMPANY MAINTAINS COMPLIANCE WITH ALL APPLICABLE TAX LAWS.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Handle the day-to-day tax compliance and planning activities and provide expert tax guidance.
  • Prepare Sales/Use or Gross Receipts tax returns ensuring compliance with state, and local tax laws and regulations. New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas
  • Ad Valorem Taxes. Work with internal and external teams to file, pay and allocate to property level. New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas
  • Motor Fuels Tax. New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas
  • Federal Excise Tax.
  • Prepare and file tax returns ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Familiarity with state, federal, and other royalty regulations is preferred.
  • Manage relationships with external tax authorities and state agencies, including representing the company in audits and negotiations.
  • Conduct detailed evaluations and audits to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Develop and implement tax strategies to minimize tax liability and maximize tax savings.
  • Stay current on changes in tax laws, regulatory statues and regulations. Communicate and provide guidance on those changes as needed.
  • Review state tax regulations to ensure compliance and all incentives and exemptions are being properly accounted for and applied.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • 10 years of experience in the oil and gas industry preferred
  • Experience with tax compliance in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas preferred
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting required
  • CPA Certification preferred
  • Strong technical skills in indirect tax compliance, particularly in the oil and gas industry
  • Experience in both public and private company environment preferred
  • Ability to analyze and apply tax accounting literature and guidance to complex accounting transactions
  • Proficient user of Excel, including macros and pivot tables highly preferred
