Join our dynamic Global Mobility Services team as a Global Mobility Tax Senior.
In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring compliance with tax
regulations and optimizing tax processes for employees on international
assignments. You will be instrumental in overseeing the tax aspects of
international mobility and ensuring that employees experience seamless
transitions when relocating across countries.
Your role.
Your work will include, but not be limited to
- Manage global mobility engagements for U.S. Expats working outside the U.S.
or Foreign Nationals working in the U.S., including:
- Build and maintain client relationships and proactively manage the client
deliverable
- Review US federal and state income tax returns
- Review of tax equalizations, hypothetical tax calculations, and cost
projections
- Conduct exit and entrance interviews with assignees
- Prepare and review U.S. individual tax returns, including
- Form 1040, Form 1040NR, Dual‑Status Returns
- Related schedules and statements (Schedule 1–3, A, B, C, D,E)
- Handle Expatriate / Global Mobility tax returns, including:
- U.S. citizens and residents working abroad
- Inbound and outbound assignees
- Provide consulting advisory services on foreign assignments, tax treaty
applications, and more
- Develop, coordinate, and supervise projects of tax staff and interns
- Take active role in practice development by promoting GMS services internally
and externally
The qualifications.
- 4+ years recent experience in public accounting, specializing in global
mobility tax
- Demonstrated skills in the areas identified in job description above.
- Bachelor's degree
- CPA preferred. In lieu of CPA an EA or JD is required
- Position may be filled as a Senior or Manager based on experience level.
- Qualified individuals must either reside in or near the Southeast Michigan,
West Michigan, Denver, or Chicago area or be willing to relocate to these
areas for this opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Engagement Management
- As part of the engagement team, the global mobility senior will:
- Prepare and detail review inbound/outbound U.S. and state income tax
returns.
- Prepare and detail review tax equalizations, hypothetical tax calculations,
and cost projections.
- Conduct entrance and exit interviews with assignees.
- Support payroll teams with cross-border tax withholding and reporting.
- Research international tax issues and treaty applications.
- Maintain accurate documentation for compliance and audit purposes.
- Communicate with clients and assignees regarding tax-related inquiries.
- Collaborate with HR and finance teams to ensure proper mobility processes.
- Coordinate engagement setup for compliance season.
- Manage client expectations and ensure timely service delivery.
- Assist managers with billing for completed projects.
Consultative Advisory
- Work with managers to advise clients on:
- Structuring foreign assignments.
- Tax treaty application.
- Payroll/shadow payroll implementation.
- Totalization agreements.
- Foreign disclosure requirements.
- Assignment cost optimization strategies for mid-market clients
Self and Team Development
- Provide candid feedback and detailed review notes to preparers and interns.
- Apply feedback received with open mind to continue to develop technical and
soft skills and ensure career progression.
- Accept stretch assignments and shadowing opportunities.
- Collaborate with managers to develop and deliver tax technical training to
staff.
Global Collaboration & Practice Development
- Build relationships internally with Plante Moran colleagues and externally
with international member firms.
- Support managers in developing strategic planning solutions for small to
mid-size mobility programs.
- Prepare/review communications (memos, summaries, returns).
- Promote global mobility services internally and externally.
- Drive efficiencies through new tools, resource sharing, and team management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA, EA, or CA.
- 3+ years of experience in global mobility or expatriate tax.
- Strong technical knowledge of U.S. tax law governing expatriate taxation,
withholding on nonresident investors, and international disclosure
requirements,
- Excellent communication, leadership, and client service skills.

This is an exempt position, so you may have to work hours that exceed the
standard 40-hour work week.
