Work Shift: Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 Compensation: Union Position: No Department Details Enterprise tax leadership position that leads a team of 7 and is responsible for direct and indirect taxes for a $12B integrated health system across a large geographic footprint in the Midwest. Summary The Senior Director of Tax is responsible for providing strategic leadership related to all tax matters for Sanford’s acute care, long-term care, health plans, and other related businesses.
Oversees all federal and state filings of all tax-exempt and taxable subsidiaries (990s, state charitable organization reporting, etc.) and all other tax-related activities including sales tax, excise tax, real estate tax, provider tax and others. Provides strategic direction on minimizing tax liability and maintaining tax exempt status while staying in compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.

Job Description
Collaborates and coordinates with finance teams, operations, and support service areas to provide enterprise-wide tax support. Tax scope is largely non-profit acute healthcare (hospitals and clinics, who have some UBTI activity), but also includes large non-profit long-term care company and additional taxable entities. Demonstrates thorough understanding of organizational capabilities across all departments and how they interrelate to one another.
Oversees all tax-related financial audits and reporting including quarterly Statutory filings for Sanford Health Plans. Provides input to department policies and leads in implementation and monitoring. Leads in standardization of tax processes throughout the enterprise; facilitates adoption of new standardized processes.
Champions integration of inefficient processes into scope of tax department as a means to improve efficiency, save money, and increase compliance. Decisions are frequently guided by a combination of team and departmental goals, operational strategies, and standard operating procedures. Assigns and coordinates work to complete large-scale projects or a very closely related set of projects or activities.
Manages the operations of the department including human resources, budget and finance, short and long-range planning, legal and regulatory compliance, and providing professional and/or technical expertise. Oversees all aspects of income tax, sales and use tax, real and personal property tax. Partners with company management and third party service providers to ensure policies and processes mitigate risk and proactively identify savings opportunities.
Provides direction for analysis of issues, data, processes and situations requiring the evaluation of multiple factors, including understanding of current business trends in own discipline. Must have ability to communicate results of analysis effectively and efficiently allowing senior leadership to make informed decisions. Works within general guidelines and documented processes; receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines approach, resources, schedules and daily goals.
Serves as corporate point of contact for tax matters and general tax information. Develops approaches to detect, resolve, and properly report issues and transactions on tax returns. Monitors consolidated trends and industry developments.
Stays current on both proposed and enacted tax law changes and reforms. Dedicated to ongoing education on industry and tax laws. Recognizes magnitude of errors; anticipates systemic consequences.
Strategically builds a productive and focused team to achieve the objectives of the department. Assesses and directs strategic staffing needs of overall operation; when necessary, establishes business case for additional resources and escalates to senior leadership. Responsible for hiring, promotions, job changes, employee development, performance reviews, and disciplinary action for all employees within the department.
Responsible for leveraging team capabilities; has latitude to make changes to job design, recommend job assignments and commit resources to longer-term projects and initiatives. Ability to interpret complex financial and accounting data. Attention to detail is essential.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or other business-related degree with an accounting minor required. Accounting degree is preferred. Master’s degree in Tax is preferred.
Must have at least seven years of tax experience, preferably in a healthcare organization and/or in public accounting. Certified Public Accountant with an active CPA license is required. Sanford is an EEO/AA Employer M/F/Disability/Vet.
