Role description

From the employer

Senior Tax Accountant / Accounting Supervisor

  • Company: Overhead Solutions Group
  • Location: Norfolk, VA (in person)

Employment Type: Full-time

Salary: $80,000 – $100,000 per year

About the Role

Overhead Solutions Group is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant / Accounting Supervisor to join our Norfolk, Virginia office. This is an in-person role for an accountant ready to take ownership of engagements, review staff work, manage tax deadlines, and oversee a portfolio of monthly accounting clients.

This is not a tax-preparation-only role. You will review tax returns, supervise and develop staff, review monthly financial reporting, communicate directly with clients, and make sure projects move from assignment through completion. The ideal candidate is technically strong, organized, and proactive, and is comfortable reviewing the work of others without needing step-by-step direction.

What You'll Do

Tax

Prepare and review federal and state individual and business tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120S, and 1120

Review tax returns and supporting workpapers prepared by staff before final partner review

Review nonprofit Form 990 returns as assigned

Identify errors, missing information, tax issues, and planning opportunities

Review extensions, estimated payments, and tax projections

Perform tax research and assist with complex federal and state tax matters

Assist with IRS and state tax notices and correspondence

Communicate with clients about tax documents, outstanding items, deadlines, and questions

Ensure tax files are properly documented and meet firm quality standards

Monthly Accounting & Client Management

Oversee a portfolio of monthly accounting clients

Review monthly financial statements and general ledgers before delivery to clients

Review bank and credit card reconciliations, journal entries, payroll activity, AP/AR, and month-end close work prepared by staff

Identify unusual balances, unreconciled accounts, missing documentation, and accounting errors

Review balance sheet accounts and financial reporting for accuracy and completeness

Ensure monthly engagements are completed accurately and on schedule

Assist with accounting cleanup and catch-up projects as needed

Help improve client accounting procedures and internal workflows

Staff Supervision & Engagement Management

Assign work and help manage staff workloads and deadlines

Review work prepared by staff accountants, provide clear review notes, and confirm corrections are completed

Train and mentor staff on tax preparation, accounting procedures, documentation, and firm standards

Help staff resolve technical accounting and tax questions

Monitor engagement progress and proactively address delays or outstanding items

Manage multiple client engagements at once, both during tax season and throughout the year

Partner with firm leadership to improve quality, efficiency, and accountability

What You Bring

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

3+ years of recent accounting experience; public accounting experience strongly preferred

Experience preparing individual and business tax returns

Experience reviewing accounting work or tax returns prepared by others

Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting and month-end close

Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software

Ability to independently manage multiple clients, projects, and deadlines

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills

Clear, professional written and verbal communication with clients and staff

Ability to work in person at our Norfolk, Virginia office

Preferred

CPA or EA designation, or actively pursuing CPA licensure

Prior Senior Accountant, Tax Senior, Supervisor, or similar public accounting experience

Experience reviewing Forms 1040, 1065, 1120S, 1120, and 990

Experience supervising accounting staff

Experience managing outsourced monthly or client accounting engagements

ProConnect Tax experience

Experience working with small businesses and nonprofit organizations

Who Thrives Here

We're looking for someone who can review, manage, and lead, not simply prepare assigned work. You should be comfortable taking a tax return, month-end close, reconciliation, or financial statement package from a staff accountant and deciding whether it is accurate, complete, properly supported, and ready to move forward.

We value professionals who spot problems, research solutions, communicate clearly, follow up with staff and clients, and take ownership of getting work done correctly and on time.

Compensation & Benefits

$80,000 – $100,000 per year, depending on experience, credentials, technical knowledge, and demonstrated ability to review work and supervise staff. Candidates with a CPA or EA, significant tax review experience, and prior supervisory experience may be considered toward the upper end of the range.
