Job Summary
The Tax & Compliance Manager is responsible for overseeing the organization's
tax compliance function, including sales and use tax, state and local business
taxes, and regulatory filings across all operating entities and jurisdictions.
This role manages a Sales Tax Specialist, assists with income and franchise tax
matters in coordination with outside tax firms, ensures accurate and timely
filings, minimizes tax risk and exposure, and supports audits and process
improvements across a multi-entity, multi-jurisdiction organization.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Filing
- Oversee preparation, review, and timely filing of sales and use tax returns
across all applicable states and localities
- Manage other periodic tax filings (business/property tax, gross receipts tax)
and coordinate registration in new jurisdictions as needed
- Assist with income and franchise tax compliance by gathering data, preparing
supporting schedules, and coordinating with outside tax preparation firms on
filings and deadlines
- Monitor nexus exposure as the business expands into new states or service
lines
- Maintain and reconcile tax accrual accounts and ensure accurate tax provision
entries
Team Leadership
- Directly manage and mentor the Sales Tax Specialist, including workload
prioritization, quality review, and professional development
- Establish and document standard operating procedures for recurring tax
compliance tasks
- Serve as escalation point for complex or non-standard tax questions from the
specialist and other finance staff
Audit & Risk Management
- Lead responses to sales tax and other regulatory audits, including data
gathering, documentation, and correspondence with tax authorities
- Identify and remediate compliance gaps; implement controls to reduce audit
and penalty risk
- Track and manage tax notices, penalties, and abatement requests to resolution
Cross-Functional & Systems Work
- Partner with the Financial Operations Team to ensure tax is correctly
calculated, invoiced, and recorded within NetSuite. Additionally support A/P
Team with resale certificates and vendor resale management.
- Ownership of Avalara system for tax compliance ensuring integration with
NetSuite is maintained, site-specific data is loaded, and Avalara filing and
compliance is maintained.
- Support tax configuration and testing for system changes, new business lines,
or entity structures
- Work with external tax advisors and outside CPA firms as applicable
Reporting & Process Improvement
- Prepare periodic compliance status reports and risk summaries for finance
leadership
- Identify opportunities to automate or streamline tax filing workflows
- Stay current on multi-state tax law changes and assess business impact
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field or combination of
education and experience
- 5+ years of progressive tax compliance experience, including multi-state
sales and use tax and multi-state regulatory filings
- 1--2+ years of experience managing or mentoring staff
- Strong working knowledge of sales/use tax rules, nexus concepts, and
exemption certificate management
- Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred) and tax automation software
(Avalara preferred)
- Advanced Excel skills
- Strong negotiation skills, focused on negotiation with State and Local
authorities Preferred
- Experience in a multi-entity or multi-subsidiary corporate structure
- General familiarity with income/franchise tax compliance and working with
outside preparers
- Basic exposure to Canadian tax requirements (GST/HST/PST) a plus, though not
required
- Experience in hospitality, services, or amenity/property management
industries

- Ability to both zoom in and resolve specific problems and plan overall
compliance strategy for the company.
